AT&T Microcell Wireless 3G Cell Signal Booster Tower Antenna
- I have never purchased something used through Amazon so perhaps should not have been surprised that I did not receive installation instructions. Also, although I did not purchase this through AT&T, my cell phone service provider at full cost for a new microcell $150), if they had not been willing to spend hours with me on the phone experimenting with the appropriate way to hook the device up, I would have had to return the item as useless to me. AT&T also had to be called to disconnect the registration of the telephone number of the previous microcell owner before I could register myself--something else that surprised me. I guess the lower cost I paid for a used device (approx. $70) justifies the inconvenience but for someone like me who is not real tech savvy, ordering used without more explanation of the process is very frustrating. Not AT&T\'s fault, not Amazon\'s fault, just the way it is. The microcell is now properly installed and works as it is supposed to.
- The product is a good thing, but after trying to install this and dealing with AT&T for hour and hours on end, we found that it wouldn\'t work. Not sure if it was the microcell or AT&T. According to the tech support for AT&T, they are going to eventually stop supporting this as the Iphone 6 and above now have Wi-Fi calling which eliminating the need for a microcell if you have good Wi-Fi. We did return this to the seller with no problems at all. Since it was a used product, it was very possible that the original owner never de-activated this unit and the seller didn\'t have any knowledge of activation/de-activation. The seller was great.
- I get very poor cell reception at my home and this product has fixed that problem. I now get 4 or 5 bars of reception where I previously got 1 or 2.The good:Easy to set up. I had it connected, plugged in and ready for activation in 10-15 minutes from opening the box.Reasonably long network cable - since it is best placed by a window to acquire the GPS signal, I appreciated the longer cableThe not as good as I would like:Price!! Unbelievable that AT&T wants so much for this. I actually bought it from Amazon Marketplace and got a better price. Even more irritating was after multiple calls to AT&T about my poor cell quality, they were not helpful at all. Even suggested it was my fault for living in a place that puts restrictions on cell towers. Sheesh!Troubleshooting instructions - after the first night of operating, a big red light came on the device and it wasn\'t working. The troubleshooting guide said only one thing...may be defective so send it back or contact place of purchase. Since the warranty is only good for the original retail purchaser, that was not much help. I just unplugged it, waited a few seconds and plugged it back in (Troubleshooting 101) and it has worked fine ever since.Overall, I am really pleased with the device. It just needs to be lower cost and AT&T needs to learn what customer care really is.
- The Microcell doesn\'t just plug in and just begin working. It needs verify a variety of services including GPS and then go through an activation process, which can be quite a pain. I followed all of the instructions, had it wired via ethernet, was near a window, etc etc and just could not get my product to activate. ATT support tried to help several times, spending hours on the phone trying to get this thing going to no avail. Eventually I just got tired of trying and left the unit as it was, plugged in and ready to go but nonfunctional. Two months later it suddenly activated on its own (leading me to believe there was no user error as I had changed nothing about its setup or configuration) and it worked GREAT for 2-3 days and then stopped working again. I just got tired of trying and stopped using it.It DID work, eventually, and boosted my signal in a home that was otherwise devoid of service, however the activation was problematic and the unit was unreliable.
- My wife and I work remotely for the same company and spend anywhere from 3-8 hours a day in meetings and conference calls, and are essentially on-call 7x24x365 and need to be reachable at all times. We moved to a new house and found that our cell coverage was very spotty, and we were missing calls and text and voice mails to a significant degree. In researching I found this item, which had mixed but generally positive reviews, and decided to give it a shot. Bottom line, it works.Setup is relatively straightforward. This device connects to and uses your internet connection, meaning that your calls/texts/browsing actually go from your phone to the microcell and from the microcell over your internet connection to the cell network, so be sure you have a fast internet connection. It also means that if your internet goes down so does your microcell.Once the device is connected it needs to find a GPS signal to validate where you\'re using it, and for that I needed to add the GPS antenna.Once the device is fully activated you can then control it via your AT&T account via the web. You have to tell the Microcell what phone numbers are allowed to connect to and use it, and they have to be AT&T numbers.I had to work with AT&T support because while our calls were working our data was not, meaning we couldn\'t surf the web, etc, over our cell connections. They worked for several hours, were knowledgeable, but were unable to solve the problem and told me that the Microcell was bad. I eventually fixed it myself by changing my internet router and voila, it started working for data.In use this thing works great. First, battery life is MUCH improved because our phones aren\'t wasting energy constantly looking for signal and reconnecting. Voice-wise the sound quality is virtually indistinguishable from a normal cell connection. Also, if we start a call at the house and then drive away the call (usually) transfers to the regular towers without issue, but going the opposite way (coming home) almost always results in a dropped call.I didn\'t like having to spend my money to solve what is, to me, an AT&T problem, but in our situation our livelihoods depended on solving the problem, and spending a couple hundred dollars for it was worth it.
