Optical Cables by Corning Thunderbolt 3 USB Type-C Male Optical Cable, 5m
- My 4k monitor is 12 feet from my Mac Pro. I\'ve had to run it via two Thunderbolt 3 cables interconnected by a docking station. This optical Thunderbolt cable (plugged into a Radeon MPX module in the Mac) flawlessly transmits audio and video.Just remember it is a data cable only. It does not conduct power.
- The Corning Thunderbolt 3 Optical 10 Meter cable is expensive but works like a charm. The maximum length for a copper Thunderbolt 3 cable is only 2 meters, so, I was concerned the 10 meter Corning cable might not work. But it does! The Corning TB3 optical cable is similar in size to a 3.5mm audio cable and very flexible. So it goes around tight corners with ease. I cannot speak for the durability and sturdiness of this cable. Only time will tell. I used this cable to connect my Mac Studio computer to a pair of Other World Computing Flex 1U4 4-bay hdd enclosures I installed in a nearby closet to eliminate the heat and noise from my office. The hard drives in the OWC Flex units immediately mounted on the MacStudio desktop. I am very satisfied with this product.
- I have a OWC Thunderbay 4 RAID drive that uses Thunderbolt 3. To unpack that tech jargon, I have a bunch of spinning hard drives that I don’t want to shake so much. I have a bouncy knee. So I don’t want the RAID drive on my desk. So I put the drive on a shelf nearby and ran this optical cable to my MacBook Pro. Now the drives don’t get shaken and I still have great fast connection. One note is that optical cables can be much longer, but they don’t carry power like copper. So my example was good. But if you want to say do a monitor and power your laptop at the same time, your are limited by physics right now to 6 feet and copper.
- Does what it’s supposed to do. I have two Areca 8-bay Thunderbolt RAID arrays, one a T2 and the other a T3. These have been on or around my desktop for a long time. This cable allowed me to move them to a nearby closet and reduce a significant noise load. Haven’t actually tested throughput, but it feels just as fast as my 2M Thunderbolt cables. Can’t speak to long-term durability, but it seems well-made, hence the 5-star rating. Will update this review if necessary. As for value, this is not a cheap cable, but it does exactly what I wanted it to do, and the competitive alternatives, if any, are few and sometimes more expensive.
- The cable is very expensive, but allows me to connect my LG UltraFine 5k after routing through the wall. Monitor is on a full motion mount.
- This cable just does NOT work.I plugged it into my Thunderbolt 3 10Gig NIC, nothing.Tried other Thunderbolt devices, nothing, not even a USB C SSD.Thought maybe, this \"optical\" cable can only work for devices that have its own power supply, well, plugged it into a powered dock, nothing.Plugged back in my 6.6ft active normal cable I have been using, and the devices work. This cable does not work.Very much need a Thunderbolt cable longer than 6.6ft, and, all i see is these super expensive \"optical\" cables. Well, this is my first experience with one. Appears to be snake oil, or these only work for certain devices under certain conditions, none of which is stated in the listing. Says works with any Thunderbolt 3 device. Don\'t waste your money on this. (For this cost, i can just buy a 2nd 10Gig NIC and 6.6ft active cable to install at other location i use my laptop at, but didn\'t want that setup, just wanted the one long cable.)
- Able to free up some space and keep my computer tower out from under the desk in the center of the room
- I love this thing. Really shows the power of thunderbolt. There\'s limitations you need to understand, but it\'s the only option out there if you need to run thunderbolt a long distance.Notable this only works for SELF-POWERED THUNDERBOLT DEVICES. That is, this needs to connect to a TB3 device that already runs on its own power. I see that some people have tried to get around this limitation by connecting this to a powered USB-C hub and then hooking their device to that hub but that\'s unlikely to work for multiple reasons. THIS IS NOT A USB-C CABLE! The \"powered hub\" you\'re using is almost certainly not a Thunderbolt 3 hub either. Please understand the limitations of this product. Once you do, it\'s amazing.I use this to keep my Mac Pro in a distance closet. With this TB3 cable I can connect my monitor, keyboard, peripherals etc to my CalDigit TB3 dock. Highly recommend. Cheers!
