- We are a full-time traveling family. We have been traveling and using or at least we\'ve been TRYING to use the Skyroam Solis X for two solid years. We write a blog and homeshool our son. We upload videos, pictures and music and use VoIP to make internet phone calls home. We download books for school and stream videos for online schooling. This device, the Skyroam Solis X worked great while in the USA. It has connectivity everywhere. However, they advertise this device as a global device, which might be true, but I\'m finding is not actually factual. It barely worked anywhere in Mexico, even in the more developed areas, connectivity was decent at best but mostly non-functioning. In Belize, there is absolutely NO connectivity... Anywhere... In the entire country. We have been in Guatemala for 10 months and it connects better than Mexico. It actually connects pretty decently, if the walls around here weren\'t made solely of concrete blocks. Literally, you have to put the Skyroam outside a window and hope for connectivity. With the cell phone/wifi booster it helps, but we only have that in the car, so to use the skyroam effectively, we have to work in our car in the driveway with the cell booster to get strong enough signal to download anything. They also don\'t mention in the large print that it\'s actually a LIMITED 4G speeds for 20GB, then throttles down to 3G unlimited data. Don\'t be fooled by this. If you use the internet for things like we do and you\'re thinking you\'ll get the speeds you need to do video conferencing and on-line schooling and things like we do, the $99 subscription plan sounds great, but in less than one month having three people doing these kinds of things and working online, we\'ve blown through nearly 100GB of Data. If I wanted to top up to get the 100GB of data it would cost me $1000.00 for the month. The other option is to buy a daypass, however, if you have the monthly unlimited subscription, you can\'t use the daypass to top up.... You have to cancel the subscription, which will still remain good through the next future renewal date, in which you still cannot use the daypass. You are limited to buying top up data and when your speeds are throttled down to 3g and you\'re trying to do something important online and lose connection, this is a deal breaker for us. Not to mention, when you\'ve run out of the 4G data speeds, it takes FOREVER to connect to 3G and try to top up your balance. It\'s not intuitive at all, and the FAQ\'s don\'t cover many topics. Actually the FAQ\'s have left us with more questions than they\'ve answered. We have been served better by having an unlocked global phone and purchasing prepaid sim cards and topping them up when we run out of data. We literally can buy 45GB of internet service for $65. That\'s $34 less than the skyroam and I actually get 4G speeds with 25 additional GB of data. This \"global device\" has literally become just a paperweight and additional charging bank for our devices. I am extremely disappointed with this purchase and definitely have buyers remorse. Skyroam--- Get your act together. You have a potentially good product but with all these stops and restrictions, I can\'t recommend this product for anything other than to play hockey with.
- Before my trip to Italy and Greece I decided to buy the Solis mobile hotspot unit instead of gambling on the frequently-reported unreliability of SIM cards. It turned out to be a good decision. It worked very well throughout and even during an Italy-Greece cruise whenever we were within 2-3 miles or so from shore (i.e., near ports). Plus it has the capability (for the Europe data package) to connect up to 5 devices. The automatic reconnections to various data sources were seamless as we traveled around. There were a few brief connection quirks in some places, probably in the more remote rural locales, but in short time (in Italy, at least) it would always find a new connection source without much delay. Some specific things to be aware of:-- the battery lasts around 8 hours so if you\'re out and about longer it pays to have an external battery for a recharge.-- the battery can get uncomfortably warm--apparently this is normal--so be aware if you should carry it in a pants pocket.-- in the first few days of usage I noticed that my available data got eaten up much more quickly than I expected. Since I was taking many photos and these were syncing with my cloud storage service I turned that feature off on my phone (same for the wife), but even then it dwindled quickly and I never figured out what other apps were eating it up. A 1 GB data purchase lasted only a day or so. Then 5 GB lasted only 4-5 days. So I bought the unlimited 30-day plan and was good for the remainder of the 4-week trip. BUT I didn\'t read the fine print that only the first 20 GB of the unlimited data is high-speed. After that it\'s throttled down to 3G speed. 3G was sufficient for most things like messaging, buying train tickets, live directions on Google Maps, etc. I commented to the Skyroam/Solis company that they should give user tips on how to conserve data (other than turning the unit off!). This would be helpful for SIM card buyers as well.
- Used it while on a 3 week van camping trip.Pros: convenience of wifi while travelling and not using my phone\'s hotspot was great. The speed was relatively fast, I was able to hold zoom meetings with no issues once I was able to achieve a stable connection. Held battery well. The size makes it convenient to carry on your pack or in your pocket. The option to pay for one month or per use is the best!Cons: takes about 3-15minutes to connect to wifi depending on where you are. Coverage wasn\'t as good as I thought. I had to keep moving camp sites or drive into town to connect to wifi. Had a couple of annoying troubleshooting issues that I needed to contact support for- they only have IT support on the app via chat. You can\'t call. Had the worst issues when the techs were trying to help me and the app would time out or I would accidentally close out to go to my phone settings and I would have to start a whole new chat with another IT support agent. Repeatedly had to explain what processes I had already gone through with previous agents. One particular time it took me 50 minutes to try and get the issue resolved. Only for it to happen again the next day. Finally got someone to fix the issue and never experienced that error again.Overall, I recommended it to a bunch of my friends who also travel and need wifi. Mentioned that Support isn\'t the best yet, but there are a bunch of cool features on the app that I have yet to explore and the internet speed was pretty saucy. The camera and power bank option are pretty cool too.
