Ultimate Ears MEGABLAST Portable Waterproof Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Speaker with Hands-Free Voice Control - Graphite
- First off, if you are looking for a great, portable Bluetooth speaker that is tough and waterproof... go buy the Megaboom 3. To be clear, the _ONLY_ reason to buy this is to give you Alexa. Otherwise, the Megaboom 3 is normally cheaper (as of last I looked), and is pretty much for all practical purposes the same speaker (despite what specs imply). Now, for this one...Several other reviewers mentioned Alexa was slow on their speaker. I have several Echo devices now (Dot, Firecube, Show, and plus) and the Megablast seems no slower or faster than any of them. I assume this means there was a software update that fixed this. The speaker does not support \"Play Everywhere\" Which is _very_ annoying. Neither does the Firecube though, so I guess this is something Amazon needs to work on. To be clear this is an AMAZON limitation and not UE, best I can tell, since even Amazon devices do not all support \"Play Everywhere\" AMAZON PLEASE FIX THIS. K? THANKS!The speaker also does not support UE\'s paring feature. So my son has a UE Boom and UE Megaboom that he can pair and play the same song on both at the same time (great for large rooms and outdoors) but I can not pair my Megablast with them. UE states (as of the writing of this review) that in the future you will be able to pair the Megablast with other Megablast speakers, but NOT the Boom or Megaboom line. This is very disappointing. The sound quality the speaker produces is on par with the Megaboom, but the Megablast can get much louder and maintain clarity. It bottoms out around 60hz, just above subwoofer range. In my tests, it seems to have a hard cut off where it will not even attempt to play the lower notes, while my son\'s Megaboom will \"flub\" as he puts it.The UE Boom, and UE Megaboom both float. This one sinks. So if you are near a lake and drop it, it might be waterproof but you will have to dive to get it back while the others will float for easy retrieval. My recommendation is that you do not drop it in a lake.At just over 2 pounds, it is a bit heavy. If you looking for something more portable, consider the UE Boom instead. Now the good:The speaker is TOUGH. We have three from this line and they have been dropped, rolled down hills and much other abuse and they all still work great. We had the JBL Charge 3, several of them, and they all broke under normal use, not even close to what we have accidentally put the UEs through.Sound quality is great for a sub $200 Bluetooth speaker. It is easily among best in class, if not the best in class. JBL\'s Extreme (at much great cost) is better, but you pay for that, and it is not waterproof nor anywhere near as tough. So it is a trade-off.Having Alexa and WiFi is great. Since my iPhone can be a hotspot, this gives me access to live streaming music anywhere I can get a cell signal - which is like 90% of where I might go in our modern world. (Without WiFi you lose Alexa, but it is still a BT speaker)I got mine on the Cyber Monday sale for a steal and I am happy with the purchase. Over all it is a great speaker with some annoying limitations that could be fixed with a later software update if UE and Amazon decide too.I do recommend you splurge and get the charging base. It turns it into an always on Alexa. If you did not want Alexa, it would be better to buy the Megaboom 3, so since you are buying this one, get the base. :)
- Huge fan of this speaker, excellent sound quality, battery life, durability, etc. After testing, I found that the speaker worked with Amazon Alex (i.e. \"Alexa whats the weather?\"), and also worked with Spotify (playing songs manually from Spotify via iPhone connected on Bluetooth), HOWEVER Alex & Spotify do not work on this model (i.e. \"Alexa, play XYZ music on Spotify\"). After researching online, I found that Amazon was no longer supporting this UE speaker model with software updates as of Aug 2022, so it no longer communicates with Spotify app which was the main reason I got this for my parents to be able to play Spotify music easily via voice command.
- The media could not be loaded. The Good:-Great sound for its size (nice highs and lows)-Good bass-360 degree sound-Louder than the Megaboom-Dust proof and water proof-Long lasting battery-Can connect via Bluetooth or Wifi-Charging base makes it much more convenient to charge rather than having to plug directly into the speaker-Easy control options through phone and Alexa-Easy to use and set up-iOS app allows for updates and more specific controls of the speakerThe Bad:-Initial set up of Wifi can be a bit dodgy through the app but restarting the app solved the issue-No carrying caseThe Bottom Line:I’ve owned and tested a lot of Bluetooth speakers including a few Ultimate Ears. I have the Megaboom so I can directly compare the two. The Megaboom was easily one of my favorite speakers but now after using the Megablast, this is my favorite overall bluetooth speaker. It’s louder and sounds crisper than the Megaboom. The highs and lows of this speaker are great along with the bass. If you haven’t tried a 360 degree speaker it’s pretty amazing since you can listen to it from pretty much anywhere. I just used this at my kid’s school and people were amazed how loud this little speaker could get. The charging base makes it much more convenient to charge than having to take off the bottom to plug in every time. The battery life is long and at full blast it falls a little short of the stated battery life but that’s expected when at full blast. The iOS app allows for the speaker firmware to be updated and you can also control more specific sound preferences. Overall if you’re looking in the premium Bluetooth speaker range, I would recommend looking at the Ultimate Ears Megablast.
- I purchased this years ago. The sound is nice and loud, the bass clean, and the words are clear when set properly. The Bluetooth does not stay connected. I have to go to the speaker and turn it off and then on to get it to reconnect. Additionally, when the speaker is off of the charger, the speaker\'s battery life only lasts a few hours. I think I may have received a faulty unit, but waited too long to replace thinking it was my older phone (Note 9). I have a Flip 4 now and still, the Bluetooth disconnects at will. Another observation, I had the UE Boom units and liked that the app had an equalizer and the ability to turn the speaker off/on from the phone app. I am going to try the Bose SoundLink for my next speaker. Wish me luck!
