Gefen EXT-USB2-0-LR USB 2.0 Extender

  • We needed to connect a Logitech HD C615 USB camera in the main part of our office to a Mac Mini in a server closet tens of yards away. According to Logitech\'s help forums, no extender would work. This one did the trick and now we have a camera we can use for video conferencing on a variety of platforms including Skype and Google Hangouts. Also, there is no noticeable lag and the audio/video quality are as good as when the camera is directly plugged into the mini which were my main concerns. The low end (read \"cheap\") extender we had didn\'t work and this was the only 2.0 extender I could find that (a) worked with Mac and (b) didn\'t require installing special drivers. I did have to restart the Mac Mini before the camera worked in Skype or with any of the web-based conferencing sites (even though it seemed to work with the Logitech software prior rebooting).Obviously, the big price tag made this less than ideal, but many of the video conferencing platforms we use require an attached USB camera. Based on the reviews, I took my chances and am pleased so far. If this device craps out, I\'ll be sure to update this review.
  • I ordered two of these sets to extend a couple of Logitech webcams and neither worked. I even worked with the Gefen Tech Support team and had no success. They set me up with an RMA number for an exchange, but I was time crunched, so I ordered two of the Icron Ranger 2201. The Icrons were plug-and-play using the exact same equipment I used with the Gefen extenders. Needless to say, I am very disappointed with the time and effort I spent on the Gefen product.I was surprised at the lack of in-depth troubleshooting support at Gefen. The guy was nice enough, but didn\'t do anything more than ensure I had set everything up correctly. He suggested swapping out the LAN cable for another, to rule out a defective cable. He also had me try another USB port on my computer. These are all things I had done, along with trying another computer altogether and trying different Windows operating systems. I even tested my LAN cables using a PlatinumTools VDV MapMaster -- they were both straight through with all pins connected..Another pain point in this experience was that the Gefen hotline was only open during weekday business hours Pacific USA time. They were also closed on Martin Luther King Jr. day. This was a real inconvenience for me, given the time crunch I was under. To their credit, at least they staff a tech support line!I have a lot of experience with USB extenders, both the un-powered USB 1.0 kind and the powered kind that support 2.0. I\'ve also used the Gefen brand before, so this experience is a real head-scratcher. Gefen is a respected brand and these units have the hallmarks of high quality (metal shell, great build) but even between the two pairs, I saw differences (e.g., LAN activity lights would activate on one pair, but not on the other.) Overall, not a good Gefen experience. On the other hand, it was a great Icron experience.
  • Worked great!! I originally choose these becuase this is the only usb device on the market that can video over 200ft. No other USB extender can send video that far. Knowing these are the best, I used it for controlling a usb mouse. I ran 350ft of cat6 cabling. I always pay the few extra bucks and only use cat6. I do this for a living. This was a $50000 job so i didnt want to cheap out on some lower end equipment. My two sense is if your running any USB device over 200ft use this piece. If lower than that distance... check out something for less money. Using cat6 allows signal to travel back and forth where cat5 only travels one direction. I know everyone talks about speed... okay cool but cat6 travels both directions and doesnt allow any lag when the usb is connected. Nothing like having a computer mouse have bad lag time! One side note: these are powered at both ends, which will amplify the signal so you could carry much longer, id say 500ft easy!
  • The best part of this Genfen version is it\'s in a metal case, and the power connector has a screw-on coupling to prevent it from being pulled out, there are also 2 USB ports on the remote end (although I have not tried the other port and am only using the one)I highly suspect these units are actually made by a Canadian company Icron (friendly, good support) as the LEDs and other markings are almost exactly identical to their \"USB Ranger 2101\" or \"USB Ranger 2211\" there is also a sticker on the bottom \"U10\" which I\'m almost certain stands for U-Stream firmware v10, which is the same as the Icron units (also re-packaged under the BlackBox name)It\'s hard to find USB extenders that actually work at USB 2.0 speeds (such as required for medical equipment), when you follow the instructions to use SOLID CAT5e cable end-to-end (no termination jacks, no patch panel, no stranded CAT5e cable \"patch cords\" in-between the adapters) these work great.Unfortunately, I have yet to find anything actually made by another manufacture that works as well.
  • We tried several options before landing on the Giffen USB extender. If you\'re willing to pay the extra amount (and its a whopping amount), you get a powerful extender with several features. So if you have the dough, this is the one to choose!
  • I\'ve used these for a variety of tasks, including connecting a Nikon SLR and doing full camera control as if the camera were right next to the computer. I don\'t notice any difference in speed with a device attached to this (though I didn\'t benchmark anything) and no drops in connectivity. However, the cable quality is very important. Do not expect to get 300 ft. of random Amazon cable and have this work. With \"random\" Cat 5 cable I got 50 feet working fine. 100 feet would start and immediately lose connection. Above that no lights would come on. However in one application I was using solid (vs. stranded) Cat 6 that was some 200 ft. and it worked just fine.
