Polk Audio Omni S2 Compact Wireless Wi-Fi Music Streaming Speaker with Play-Fi (Discontinued by Manufacturer)
- I wanted to really love this thing. I planned to fill the house with them and add the sound bar. However the speaker is not blowing me away in my early testing. It is nice build quality, it fills the room nicely, placement matters (- still trying different things), but can you say it makes everything sound better? No. Certainly a nice sound. A tiny bit muddy but I am still trying different locations to see what might brighten it enough. I would give speaker 4 stars on its own.Now to the software... 2 stars only because it does actually function. but UGH! clumsy, slow, delayed, not intuitive and feels dated. Nothing like the Sonos software. And I hate to say it because I really wanted to have a different experience. The software isn\'t that the easy part?? Just look at how Sonos works and find ways to improve upon it. Sadly, this is nothing close to that, and takes you back 10 years. It is very primitive and slow. Does nothing but get under my skin. For example the interface makes you pick the speaker(s) every time you go into it after exiting. Really?! I have one speaker! How about a bit of programming that looks for this scenario and work more intuitively. Not to mention if it just preserved last settings that would be an improvement. So folks will be forced to keep the app going and drain battery instead. Workaround and unpleasant example one of many in the current interface. I do hope they improve it from the beta ware that it is right now. Polk please hire some killer programmers and cut them lose on it. Nothing like setting up for a poorly executed business plan by putting everything into the hardware and nothing into the experience the customer touches the most, software. Kiss of death. Folks will simply spend the money and get Sonos instead, if they care about how interacting with the sound system impacts their experience. How sad. Volume, good luck getting the right level in say, pandora. nothing gradual or refined about it. I have taken to walking over to the speaker and adjusting with the buttons on the front. Just sad. Who did your programming and worse yet, who did the beta testing that thought this beta ware was worthy of the Polk brand!?
- Great loud sound coming from one tiny speaker! Can pair 2 and activate stereo sound with the app for more dynamic sound! Would love to try that..The instructions could use some work though. The setup is ruff. The app will walk you threw it though. Just make sure to be next to your router when you set this up. Then once you program your speaker with your wireless settings and speaker then move it to where you want it..Takes the speaker awhile for it to connect to the router.. could be my router/range (TP-LINK AC3200 Tri-Band Wireless) but even right next to it, it can still take a few mins to connect. Used my samsung galaxy tab s2 tablet and note 4 without problems using there omni app. Can serve your local music and other music streaming music services threw there app. Also appon registering you get a free app to use on it on your pc too.. have not tried it yet on the pc.Bummer was no tidal on there omni app currently.. though I seen some other play-fi app thst said there last update now uses tidal and read that it said if you own polk or other speakers that have there own app to use that and here it works perfectly with the polk speakers and is basicly the same app but will work with tidal!! Super sweat!! :)Happy with it overall though and I\'m sure my daughter will love it for her iTunes music! Also read you can use a usb to network Dongle if needed... also will work with a network share drive and the app would control it as well. And of course you can just plug a device straight to it with a 3.5mm plug as well.Honestly.. new to wireless speakers and thought I was buying a Bluetooth speaker for my daughter and I step bought the latest and greatest tech by accident with wifi/hifi sound which is way better then compressed Bluetooth sound! Happy!!
- I compare this Polk [had it since Xmas] to the Klipsch KMC1,which is costing about the same price on Amazon, as of today at ~$129, despite their differences in list price.the Polk Omni S2 speaker is bass heavy due to over boost. I called Polk technical support, and there is no way that the user can adjust EQ to alleviate the bass (at least for the foreseeable future, until they come up with an app) . As a consequence of the heavy bass, you tend to hear the echo or resonant/coloration of low frequency musical passages, which is annoying! This leads to poor and distorted midrange and high frequency responses. If you listen to rock or radio talk, it\'s probably OK, since the annoyance is not perceived noticeably. However for classical or vocal passages, the effects become obvious. In terms of connectivity, Polk is among a few first to adopt Play-Fi, that uses your Wi-Fi network for transmission, you can extend to multiple speakers. While the Klipsch still uses bluetooth for personal listening. The advantage of Play-Fi, one can argue, is that it has higher bandwidth, but still requires the presence of a Wi-Fi network [e.g. if you\'re on a remote campsite, the 3.5mm cable comes to the rescue]. but at the end of the day, the sound is what determines the worthiness of the speaker.Other the note is the Omni S2 by itself is a mono speaker, while the Klipsch is set up as a stereo unit. so for soundstage and musicality the Klipsch is better. The bass on the Klipsch is not as heavy as on the Polk (cutoff at 65Hz), but it\'s tight and neutral. Overall, I enjoy the Klipsch much better for the kind of music we are listening. Another consideration is one has to double up the cost to achieve the stereo sounding on the Polk.On the other hand, if you are into the heavy bass, and listen mostly to rock, then the Polk will give you plenty of the hefty bottom.
