- I bought this camera because I love the night sky and I wanted it for a road trip I\'d be taking, specifically to watch the peak of the Perseid meteor shower. This camera was built with astrophotography in mind, and I have to say, it is well worth it! You don\'t have to take extremely long shots to get beautiful photos of the milky way, not with this camera! Because it was built more for astrophotography, the frames per second is low and slow. So it\'s not great for high speed action shots. I bought another camera for that. Still a great camera!
- I upgraded to this (big upgrade) from a Canon T3i. Wow, what a fabulous camera. The dynamic range just blows me away. I very often underexpose by 2-3 stops (to avoid blown out highlights/back-lit scenes) and just magically \"lift\" the shadows back with minimal noise (if shooting a low ISO). High ISO is awesome too, but this camera is essentially ISO-invariant, so doesn\'t matter. I love the NUMEROUS awesome features like GPS location tagging, control-lighting for dark-work, in-camera image stacking/combining (multi-exposure, long-exposure, star trails..), and the 5-axis sensor-based IMAGE STABILIZATION is just killer. I routinely handhold shots at 1/4 second exposures and get perfectly useful results. I carry a tripod a lot less. The pixel-shift feature (tripod req\'d) gives JAW DROPPING resolution if you have a great lens attached (hopefully a prime, but the 28-105mm \"kit\" lens is no slouch). Only area where this camera isn\'t quite meeting competition (and it surpasses in others, like listed above) is in autofocusing fast/furious action (sports, etc.) but I\'ve gotten adequate results of some fast moving creatures (eagles in flight, etc.). HIGHLY RECOMMENDED camera
- Though over twice as heavy as the Nikon D5300 it replaced, I\'m extremely happy with the camera. The numerous dials allow quick changes without going into the menus. The camera arrived safely, well packaged, on time. Thank you, Camera Box!Attached are just 2 of the over 400 photos I shot at Stetler Chrysler/Dodge/Ram/Jeep\'s annual show, on May 20, 2018. I make my living as an outdoor, vehicle website photo photographer for local dealers. I shoot nearly 50,000 photos/year so I appreciate the Shutter Count rating on the K-1 is 300,000.
- A must for Pentax lovers, especially if you own an extensive collection of old Pentax lenses (and some of the new prime lenses as well). In my opinion, it can\'t be beat for the price. Video quality is average at best, but stills are superb.
- Great features, incredible resolution and the kit lens that came with this purchase is more than adequate for 98% of photographic needs. Typical high quality Pentax product, finally now in full frame mode.
- Glad I waited for the mark II. I doubt I buy another camera. This is pro quality.
- Such a great product ! Worth every penny!
- Been a K-3II user for three years and loved that camera (purchased from Amazon). Wanted to move to full frame and finally pulled the plug on this K-1II (purchased elsewhere on a Black Friday deal). What is great:> Everything that was on the K-3II and more with12 more Mega Pixels to make it 36.4 MP! ...- Auto Focus....well Pentax has always been behind on that one but this camera is a significant improvement from my K-3 II. I am using a Pentax FA 100 MM Macro and an SMC Pentax-A 28mm F2.8 and SMC Pentax-A 50MM F1.7 and I was able to focus on Seagulls in flight at New Smyrna Beach, Florida. All I can say is that with the increase in AF focus points (to 33) this focuses very well even for sports (no it is not as good a Sony!). Most of us usually use only one point in AF-C Mode anyway if we are tracking wildlife! It will focus assist even with the old SMC lenses that are manual focus. I often can manual focus as fast as any auto-focus camera anyway since I have been shooting SLRs since the 1970s when there was no auto-focus!- Pixel Shift Resolution II works on static images (architecture, products, etc) and is incredible in detail. The Dynamic version of this is great but only for static images also. It is better than without it, but not as good as Pixel Shift II on the tripod. (See Tony Northrup\'s video on the K-II).- Built in GPS with GEO Tracking and a Compass! Tracking log and be uploaded into Google earth and it maps out your travel path and each photo stop. GPS coordinated in EXIF data and can be read in your editing software like Adobe PS CC. Compass can be seen on your monitor screen.- Astrotracer . Worked great in my K-3 II and now in a full-frame camera is great! You can actually multiply your exposure time of cameras without this. An tripod mount Astro-Tracer motor can run well over $250 and often the better ones can approach $500 to $1,000!- Shake Reduction SR II....that is what lead me the K-3II (shooting 1/8 sec handheld!) and is now even better. Notice how everyone else is now going to IBIS (Sony, Panasonic, Olympus, and finally Fuji. Canon is working on it as we speak. But it just works great in the Pentax cameras for the last four years!> HDR - Just like the K-3 II, this camera makes incredible images with HDR and you don\'t need any other software to edit it! Sony makes you use their clunky HDR software and no body likes it! I open these in Adobe Raw and they are just incredible! Windows file manager views them and you will know the HDR images in your folders as they will look duller than the rest! But when you open them in Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) they come alive with detail and vibrancy!> Microphone and Headphone jacks!> High ISO range...OK, no one is going to actually use ISO 819,200 (yes, that is marketing hype) but I can shoot 3200, 6400, and higher with great results where my K-3II starting showing significant grain.> High Dynamic Range! In PhotoShop I can pull clean detail out of nearly totally dark shadow areas, and bring down any bright areas as long as they are not blown out (so, yes, you should expose to the right [ETTR]!)> I am able to crop 2/3 of the 36.4 MP image and the resolution looks better on that cropped image than on my uncropped APS-C K-3II!> Incredible tilt-Monitor! Not like the Canon which is know for their monitors. Pentax took a different path with the four stainless steel extending stanchions and the screen hinged also on top. Allows me to make those close to the ground shots without having to do the belly crawl! It angles sideways about 35 degrees to aid in over the head or off-center shots in crowded areas, 44 degrees down, and 90 degrees up. I think Pentax went this way to make it easy to protect the wire connections. It is sturdy, it works, and is a huge step up from Pentax.> Weather and dust resistant. What Pentax is known for! I want a tough camera that does not have to be treated with kid-gloves! Pentax makes that in all their cameras and there is a huge following for that. The K-i II is a magnesium alloy frame which is tough and also gives you EMF (Static) shielding. You can\'t get that kind of protecting in Nikon, Canon, or Sony until you spend two to four times as much!> Dials galore! You can virtually control all aspects of this camera without touching the menu screen! The dials on top and in the front and back give you control that surpasses all other cameras on the market! Nice also that you can use the well-organized menus also! You can also set 5 user presents on the left dial.> Beautifully bright Pentaprism with near 100% view through the eyepiece. Just a great view! The settings indicators at the bottom of the viewfinder are much brighter than on the K-3II.> LED lights galore! All over the camera to help with changing lenses, changing settings, adjusting screen, etc and they can be set to different levels in the menu system.> The menu system is much like the K-3 II (considered by many to be one of the better ones out there) and now has many more options! The quick menu using the Info button gives you 90% of what you could want anyway.> No one caught this one: the K-1II does indeed have the in-body lens focus drive screw so any older lenses (for the K-3 II and earlier) will indeed focus on this and it will focus faster! My Pentax FA 100mm F2.8 Macro focuses quickly on those Seagulls using the screw drive!> Lenses....Lenses....Lenses...No other brand has the depth of old lenses that will work on their latest flagships! Pentax is great for this... I get a lot of my lenses (SMC Pentax-A 28mm and 50mm) from Ebay and KEH. They are literally a steal compared to new lenses and I get great images with those primes! Remember that film which used silver-halite grains was near 4K resolution (that is why old 35mm films can be made into Blu-Ray 4-K, and digital video such as what was filmed for Star-Trek DS9 and Voyager is stuck in 720p up-scaled to 1080p in DVD)! They made great lenses then. Not that they don\'t today, but wow...they can cost more than your first car, or even last year\'s car! What is Not So Great:> Ok, yes, a long way to go to catch up with Sony\'s or Canon\'s Pro Models AF points and also the price! No eye capture either!> Video is still at Full HD 1080p and it is MPEG 4 AVC/H.264 which is compressed and therefore you can\'t use an external video recorder like the Atomos Field Recorder which needs native format. Way behind most others. On the other hand, YouTube is still primarily 1080p and our bandwidth in this country is still lagging to actually streak 4K on more than one device! I make video for my family and YouTube and this camera is just fine for that. If I was making my income on Video I would have either the GH5 or Sony A7 or A9 series. And yes, I need to make a lot of money for those.> It is heavy! But I value that kind of sturdiness and sense of durability. I go hiking with this plus the battery grip in the woods in the Great Smokey\'s and on the salty beaches of Florida because it will take the punishment. (I am 59 so I am not a spring chicken either). Just get a good wide strap system that is comfortable and you will be fine.Bottom Line...This is the most Full-Frame camera you can get for the price! It is not for videographers but for Nature / Landscape, Astro-Photography, Family pics, Portraiture, Product images, Weddings, and even sports it is a tough high-performance imaging system that is versatile, packed with useful features, and durable. That fills a big niche!
