Ultimate Ears MEGABLAST Portable Waterproof Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Speaker with Hands-Free Amazon Alexa Voice Control - Blizzard
- I checked out ALL of the portable speakers on display at Best Buy, and this speaker had the best sound by far. Comparison included other speakers in similar price range from UE - Blast, Boom, Megaboom, Bose (which lacked clarity).Pros:UE Megablast is VERY clear in mid-range and has decent tight base - not artificially boomy, like some cheaper portable speakers. I found the sound quality review on WhatHiFi to be spot on - my impressions exactly. Built quality is solid - anyone with toddlers in the household will appreciate that this speaker can take some abuse. It can be knocked, dropped (even into a kitchen basin!) and still be OK (confirmed). The charging base is a must-have, and is overpriced. But the speaker looks so good, that it can be used both outdoor and indoor, permanently. The Blizzard color is very nice IMHO.Cons:Software is still in development. I recently got a second speaker and paired two speakers using the Beta version of the UE app. The app works, mostly. The pairing process is not 100% reliable, but once paired, you can fill a whole house with music, not just one room. Or you can do a true left-right stereo setup.Overall, sound quality more than compensates for software being somewhat raw.
- I bought a Megablast at Best Buy. They had it marked down to $179 just before Christmas. I had been looking at them on Amazon and watching YouTube reviews and was a little bit hesitant because of some of the negative things said. I went to Best Buy and listened to almost every portable speaker they had and the mega blast and the JBL boombox sounded the best. I bought a JBL boombox through Amazon and I’ll be honest with you I am probably going to return it because the little mega blast is almost as loud as the boom box. It just has a little less base. I would rather have two mega blast speakers for the same money as the JBL boombox.I absolutely love this Megablast speaker. It is loud for a small portable speaker. I use it in my home as one of my many Alexa speakers for music throughout the house and then I simply grab it and go and Alexa goes with me. It works great as a standalone Bluetooth speaker with my iPhone as well. Some of the negative reviews said that when the music was turned up the Alexa could not hear your voice. That is true of almost every Alexa device that I have. This one actually seems to pick up your voice commands at loud or volumes better than most other Alexa devices I have used. The other negatives mention in reviews were that it doesn’t have a jack for an external audio input which doesn’t really bother me and that it did not have speakerphone functions building . This is a feature I detest in my other Bluetooth speakers because I answer my phone trying to have a private conversation and start battling with the Bluetooth speaker to prevent it from broadcasting my conversation to everyone. If that’s important to you then you probably don’t want this speaker, but it doesn’t bother me a bit. If you are invested in the Alexa platform and use it to control your home and play music throughout your home you will love this speaker. My recommendation is buy the speaker I think you’ll love it. It’s hard to beat the sound quality for its size. I’m going to buy more. And I just read on the Ultimate Ears website that in 2019 they are going to do a software update so you could connect up to 8 Megablast speakers together like you can their other speakers for party mode in case there’s an issue holding you back.
- I\'ve been using UE products for a long time now, and they have yet to release a product that has disappointed me as much as the Megablast has. In short, it sounds great. Fantastic even. But that hardly matters when the speaker tends to fail on you on a consistent basis.I first bought the Megablast a couple years ago. I love UE\'s portable speakers, as they\'re handy to take on the go. I listen to them at my job, going camping, I play them if I have an outdoor party, and if I\'m going on an extended trip, they\'re something I immediately bring along. Eyeing the Megablast as a replacement for my first Megaboom which had an unfortunate accident, I was eager to hear its sound. And when it advertising worked, it sounded fantastic. It was loud, clear, and crisp. And here\'s where the but comes in...The speaker plagued me with connection issues, both with my phone (the Galaxy S10+), and my iPad Pro. When I would take it to work, it had a tendency to randomly disconnect from the device it was paired to. This got very annoying, very quickly. The device and speaker were never more than a few feet apart from each other, and there was little obstructing the path to each. There was no way they were having connection difficulty. It got so bad at times that the sound would actually crackle when the device was sitting right beside it on a table. (And yes... I had the app downloaded, and the latest firmware installed.) I had no answer as to what was going on.I got in contact with Customer Service and credit where credit is due, they immediately shipped me a replacement. I thought that was the end of it.Keyword: Thought. It wasn\'t long before similar issues began to spring up on my replacement. The same random disconnects, and distortion. It even got to the point where it wouldn\'t even turn on without a factory reset. Now I would bring this up to Customer Service, and they\'d either take their time getting back to me, or they\'d give me solutions that just didn\'t work. It made me believe that I was doing something wrong with this, and made engaging with Customer Service very stressing. The last time I contacted them, it took them a few months to get to me. And by the time they replied, they only said the warranty was expired, before giving me a code for 20% off any of their products... (thanks...)So what happened? I still have no clue, but I\'ve devised a couple theories. One being that this product has a huge dependence on Wi-Fi. Without it, it might be prone to the random disconnects I had. They may have not off now then they could chew trying to include Alexa, which I had fun with for a while, but rarely ever used it. I got this speaker to play music. The fact that it seemingly needs Wi-Fi should be a bit of a red flag, but I\'m not convinced this is the entire problem, which leads me to my next theory.Even at home, with Wi-Fi, the speaker had issues similar to when I took it out. There were times where it straight up would not turn on unless I factory reset it, and I\'m beginning to wonder if it was an issue that it had with the wireless charger my unit came with. When it was home, it almost never left the charger, and I\'m wondering if that might have done something. I\'m terrified to use it with the replacement Megaboom 3 I recently bought, because I\'m worried it might screw it up.But again, both of these are only theories, and I have no real solid answer to what went wrong. I even theorized that my iPad might have been faulty, but I\'ve written that off because I\'ve since replaced my Megablast. I bought a refurbished Megaboom 3, and I have yet to have a single issue with it. It holds a connection, it sounds great, it is all I ever wanted from my Megablast. Yes, there is a slight downgrade in the sound quality with the Megaboom 3, but I\'ll take it is it means I don\'t have to manually restart my speaker every 30 minutes. (Not an exaggeration.)I still have both my Megablast units. As they let me keep the defective one, I used it as kind of a beat-it-up unit. It no longer holds a connection as it disconnects instantly as soon as it connects to any device, and the replacement they sent me still had issues that require factory reset in order to work properly. That\'s not to mention a few other problems it has.As I have no idea what happened to these units, but the fact that the same issues plagued both devices really doesn\'t ring well with me. It feels less like coincidence, and more like general flaw. I want to give UE the benefit of a doubt here, but it\'s hard when it feels like I got shafted in the long run. This was a $300 speaker that I bought because I wanted a good portable speaker. It gave me one of my worst cases of buyers remorse.I hope one day, they can give the next Megaboom or whatnot the sound quality that the Megablast had, because again, when it worked, it sounded fantastic. But it hardly matters when I was faced with constant problems.I don\'t know if I just got really unlucky here, but if this speaker sounds like it might be for you, I urge caution. The Megaboom 3 from UE sounds almost as great, and has a longer charge. If Music is all you want this speaker for, I\'d think twice.
