AKG K545 BLK Studio-Quality, Closed-Back, Over the Ear Headphones (Black)

  • I currently own a pair of Sony MDR-V6, AKG K550, and the AKG K545. I have two sets of earbuds, but have also owned the ATH-M40X, Shure SRH440s, and have tried the Sennheiser HD8 DJ and the Philips SHP9500. I cannot say I am an audiophile in any sense, but I know what I like when it comes to the sound of a pair of headphones. Out of all of those sets, I find that, for at home use, the AKG K550s are my top choice. The comfort factor, the sound quality, the construction... They hit all of the marks I ask for out of a good pair of headphones, and they float around $150, which is about the max I am willing to shell out. Again, not an audiophile, just a fan.I had used the MDR-V6s at work for roughly a year now. I like them, as they are lightweight and relatively comfortable and easy to handle. My minor frustrations laid in the fact the earcups did not swivel and that the cable was much longer than I really needed. Not big issues. I decided to transfer those back home for production, and get something to replace those at work. The K545s dropped to $99, and I decided, with as much as I loved the K550s, why the hell not? I loved the blue on the earcups and figured they were a more portable version of the K550s.When I had gotten them in, I let them sit for awhile, trying to \"break them in,\" which I still am unsure if that is even a thing. Sound quality? Great! A lot of the stuff I listen to, especially at work, is hard to audibly distinguish between sounding great or sounding perfect. Regardless, I cannot complain about the sound. They are nice and even from top to bottom, without any unnecessary lows, no shrill highs, and no overpowered mids to make everything sound muddy. It is what I expect from the K550s, and these do not disappoint. For the comfort rating, I\'d give them a 3.5/5. The earpads are the same material as the K550s, but because they don\'t have as much area, they do seem to feel a slight bit stiffer. I don\'t necessarily mind it, as the K550s look like earmuffs when I wear them, and I haven\'t felt fatigued while wearing these thus far. My only minor complaint is that the cups swivel outward, but not inward. I would like to be able to have the cups sit flat against my chest to protect them from projectiles thrown at me in the woods or where ever I may be.Construction is great on these, as they feel akin to the K550s, nice and strong and durable. The swivels are not loose and stick where you stop them. This is good and bad, because you have to manually get the right fit, but once you do, they stay.In the end, I think this review hit on just how much I love the K550s, and these seem quite similar for a lower entry-price. I very much am happy with my purchase.
  • This head phone is highly recommended after spending some time with it and burning it in over the weekend. First, this is a portable model, its really designed for walking and travel. It has an overall very sturdy construction, you should not have any problems with fragility. The band is nice, and the clamping force isn\'t too much but just enough that it will stay on your head.Sound quality is good. Sound stage is pretty good, especially for a closed can headphone. It\'s not like a Sennheiser 598/595 level, but its still very good. Same with instrument separation, you can hear everything very clearly. Playing games with this is great, Alien Isolation and others were very immersive with the wide sound stage. Bass is punchy and accurate, and Highs and Mids are clear and slightly crystalline in my opinion. Mids are slightly recessed, and I mean slightly. Being only 32 OHM, this set is ridiculously easy to drive. Shouldn\'t have a problem with any MP3 player or Smart Phone in this regard, and you definitely don\'t need an amp. Now, there are a few cons. First, the ear cups are a little small, so just be aware of that if you have smaller ears. It is a little difficult to get a good seal because of this, but I got fairly used to positioning it right. The pads are not great, overall its comfortable but wearing glasses sometimes it rubs just a touch. You can replace the pads, I have heard of being able to do that with say HD 280 bads or HM5 pads, but I haven\'t done that myself. The cables that come with this headphone sucks, period. The headphone terminates in a 2.5 mm jack where the cable comes into the headphone. It comes with two cables, one for IOS and one for Android. I do not know why the IOS buttons don\'t work on Android, but that is the case. They also do not have a Mic on either cable, which is annoying. You think at this price point it would, but whatever. I ended up getting a cable with controls that work with both iOS and Android and has a mic, its perfect for my Galaxy S7 Edge. I\'m not sure if this is placebo or not, but I feel that the bass improved quite a bit with a new cable. So overall, you\'re probably going to want a different cable, but they are only 10 bucks or what not.So overall, it is a good headphone. One of my favorites sonically that I have heard, and it has the added benefit of being closed can and not leaking sound. There is just a few annoyances, and you may need to pick up a few things. The only thing I don\'t super like is the size of the ear cups, which isn\'t a big deal, but if it was closer to the size of the AKG 553 it would be perfect.
