JBL Charge 2+ Splashproof Portable Bluetooth Speakers - Black
- Jbl always high quality!
- I had been eyeing this speaker for a while now but was unsure whether to go for this model or the fully waterproof and louder JBL Charge 3. I finally had an opportunity to compare them side by side with a wide range of music. Hands down, I have no doubt that the JBL Charge 2+ win\'s this when it comes to sound quality alone. Both are a good looking speaker and very well made for the price. The Charge 3 is obviously bigger but not really much heavier, or certainly does not feel so. It has an impressive feature set, being fully waterproof, very long battery life (20 hours) and feels a very solid speaker in the hand. It also comes with a world wide adapter plug set (for use in UK and Europe), great for travel. This adapter plug is not available with the Charge 2+ which only features a US charge plug. Both speaker models have a USB Charge Out which means you can also use them to charge your phone when out, a great feature. The Charge 2+ is smaller but equally well made and nicely designed. It is water resistant but lacks the covered rear plugs seen on the Charge 3. It has battery life of around 12 hours. Playing music was the important factor for me and as previously mentioned, the Charge 2+ wins it for me. It feels more balanced and refined with a range of music. Bass is well defined and the mid\'s sweet on the ear. It never feels tiresome to listen to over long periods and neither does it struggle to play music clearly at a room filling level. Sure, the Charge 3 is a good speaker and it can go loud, which maybe important for some when it comes to outside parties. It can go loud and remain clear. The bass is less noticeable and the high\'s less defined. Improvements can be made to the sound of the Charge 3 by use of the EQ settings in apps such as Napster and Spotify which may well be acceptable for some when it comes to deciding on which speaker to purchase. It has been noted by others, that JBL made improvements to the Charge 2 sound quality by way of a firmware update and the same may well happen to the Charge 3 in the near future. Should that happen, then the Charge 3 will become a no brainer buy for me. I think it is likely that the waterproof membrane is affecting the sound quality but the fact that it is waterproof is also a great bonus, meaning you can take it pretty much anyway without worry. I really wanted to like the Charge 3 given it\'s great feature set, nice design, good built quality and generally good sound, but I just kept coming back to the Charge 2+ when conducting sound tests. At the price of $92, the Charge 2+ is a great buy and one I expect to be happy with for some time to come as I honestly expected I would have to pay significantly more for the sound quality I was looking for. I also paired this speaker with a very nice quality carry case found here Khanka EVA Hard Case Travel Carrying Storage Bag for JBL Charge 2 & JBL Charge 2+ Plus Splashproof Portable Bluetooth Wireless Speaker . Fits USB Cable and Wall Charger - Black
- While calling myself an audiophile would be an exaggeration, in my 30 year broadcast career, and personal love of music of all genres, I appreciate good sound reproduction. That of course can be a relative term. When it comes to portable blue tooth speakers, what \"good\" means depends on varying factors. There is a trade off of the convenience of portability with a small size with a reduced frequency response, especially in the low ranges, the bass. I have enjoyed the very inexpensive and very compact (you can slip it in your pocket) Dknight Magic Box 2. For the bargain basement price of $29 more or less, it provides a startlingly vivid sound in the mid and high range. You have to position it just right in a corner or against a wall (a long known audio trick) to get what I would call a decent if not exceptional bass response. However put it outside and almost all of the lower end disappears. I finally was ready to try a higher end name, and was prepared to pay the extra cabbage. Like you who are reading this, I pored over all the Amazon reviews of various brand names...and narrowed my search to this JBL beauty. I noticed the few negative reviews had nothing to do with the sound quality but with issues of failure or power problems. So if that occurs down the line..I will be prepared to modify this review. Now for the sound: Somehow JBL has created a carry around speaker (will not fit in your pocket but still small and portable) that gives the kind of rich low end thump bass reminiscent of the large console stereo my grandparents had (with two 12 inch woofers). But the quality extends to the mids and high end. Playing some of my favorite Amazon prime tunes that I have listened to hundreds of time, I discovered new more lifelike nuances I hadn\'t caught previously. It is simply a joy to experience. It approaches the level of a standard dual two speaker stereo system, with a couple of exceptions. Though more than loud enough in virtually any indoor setting, it cannot rival a true large concert like system. Also, though the great sound will fill the room, unless you are a foot away, you will not notice any dramatic stereo separation. But again, that\'s a trade off for the size. For many years I enjoyed a $500 Bose Wave Radio/CD player. Updated versions of this continue to be popular today. Bose is a great product, but the sound from this small wonder beats the Wave.. The fact you cannot skip forward or go back a track from the speaker is irrelevant to me, I always facilitate that from my smart phone. Have yet to use phone call function...again secondary to me. My wife and I tried the multi blue tooth device function..she was able to \"cut in\" and play a song. However when I tried to return the favor my phone would not re-pair until she turned her Bluetooth off. Mine is a Droid and hers an I-Phone so maybe that is the issue. Again, not really important to me. The water resistance is a nice feature. I highly recommend this one...really sweet listening experience.
