SONY PHA-2 Headphone Amplifier
- Nicely made, a bit under powered, needs optical input, expensive but nice to see Sony quality manufacturing of old returning.
- This will be quick and to the point. For a rugged portable that is idevice compatible for under 600 bucks this is the best. I looked into the Other major players such as Nuforce. Fostex, CEntrance, beyerdynamic, cypher,Fiio, and others and this rates out quite well. Built like a tank well designed with excellent sonic specs and qualities. I also used the line out pair with my Rudistor NX-02 and the DAC performed well. Long battery life and the lithium battery is replaceable. The negatives is the input switch button could be better and easier to operate and of higher quality. Also you will need an optional AC adapter to charge by plugging into a standard socket. It can be USB charged through a computer or powered USB hub. No apple lightning adapter but Sony rightly assumes if you have an iDevice you are in possession of the cable already. It\'s really a 4.5 star product. No regrets whatsoever. I know 600 bucks is no joke but look at the others and you\'ll see this is actually a bargain and future proofed.Update: I\'ve decided to return the product. I\'m not excited about the battery life and time it takes to recharge. Prices of these devices are starting to fall back to earth. I\'ve decided to go with just a portable DAC. The cypher algorhythm solo R fits this bill. I will initially use it as a device for home use with my Rudustor. I will then monitor the prices of the sony pha-2 the cypher theorem and the Hifi M8. I will be on the lookout for a quality portable headphone amp to pair with the DAC in the meantime.
- Was expecting more that just a volume boost, like better EQ and Compression. Tried with different sources (iPhone, iPod, iPad), same results. Decided to return it since not having these features meant being stuck with a brick that doesn\'t give you teh advertised Ahhhhhhhhh sound ...
- So far, so good, though I have only had mine for a week. I have been looking for a small, rechargeable DAC/amp to use with my iPod both in my car and with headphones. The fact that this plays high resolution files is nice but not essential for me, as iPods can\'t play anything higher than 24/48, and I doubt I could hear the difference from 16/44.1 in my car or most of the time with headphones. But it\'s been a dream for years now that I could get digital-out from the iPod\'s dock port into a small DAC and then amplify it with a line out into my car\'s aux input, and this does the trick. It sounds very good to me, too. It validates my expectation that, though pretty good, the weak link in my chain all along has been the iPod\'s DAC. I\'ve used it with a variety of headphones, both in-ear (Etymotic ER4s) and over-ear (several types), and have been very pleased. I\'ve listened to lots of lossless music on my iPod as well as Spotify and iTunes Radio. Both of those streaming services sound surprisingly good, given they use lossy compression and are broadcasting wirelessly.I\'d love to find a good case for this that has a pocket for the various cables (mini-usb, 30pin, Lightning) I\'d like to carry with it. I\'ve seen one for sale through Amazon Japan but seller won\'t ship to the U.S. Any ideas?
- Great sound quality and top notch construction, although the battery life could be better. I\'ve used this with ACS T1 custom IEMs and Audeze LCD-X headphones.
- Did not really think this would be worth the $. There could not be that much difference could there? Yes there is! My first listen was to Hillary Hahn\'s performance of Bach- Concerto for Violin, Strings and Continuo in E major-1.Allegro. The muddiness was gone! Crisp, beautiful. Second listen was Keith Jarrett\'s Bregenz, May 28, 1981 Part I. Again the crisp clean sound is.....crisp clean! Oh well I guess this won\'t be going back!
- I love this amplifier. I purchased it used, but it performs as if it were brand new. A DAC that provides digital to analog conversion and amplification on lossless formats as well as DSD. A great deal at a good prices. I would purchase from this vendor again.
- My first amplifier and very good to use. Can drive most of my headphones well. And it looks really cool.
