Sony Noise Cancelling Headphones WHCH700N: Wireless Bluetooth Over the Ear Headset with Mic for phone-call and Alexa voice control - Blue
- I just received these 4 days ago, and have used them on 2 cross country flights. These are an upgrade from a pair of cheap on-ear Sol Republic wired ANC headphones.Comfort: More comfortable than over-ear phones I\'ve used. I have a huge head and wear glasses, a few turns with these on for 7 hours straight leads me to no complaints on comfort. They could be squishier, but I like the lower profile to keep them slim for travel. Headband padding is minimal, but they feel fine on the top of my big bald head.Travel: At first I assumed I wouldn\'t like that the earcups fold to flat (each rotates 90 degrees) but the headband doesn\'t fold in. Now after traveling with them in my backpack, I prefer it. When folded, they take up more area than my older headphones that fold into a bundle, but I think they are less bulky by being relatively flat. These fit really well into my backpack. I worry a little about the earcups and padding being more exposed than a collapsing pair, so I might look for a slim pouch or case to protect them in my bag.ANC: I\'ve deliberately never tried a pair of high-end ANC headphones on a plane because I\'m afraid they will blow me away by blocking everything and not allowing me to ever buy cheap. These honestly aren\'t light-years beyond my previous headphones, but they do seem to block slightly higher frequencies and also produce less electronic noise. I\'m writing this review on a plane right now. The Sonys do a pretty good job blocking almost all low frequency engine roar. There is a little faint low frequency sound leaking through, but I\'m satisfied. These do not block high frequency sound, so expect very little effect on voices or airplane ventilation. This plane has a surprisingly loud air movement system, so I\'m getting very audible \"hissing\"... this is where I\'m afraid to try high-end phones because if they block that stuff then I would probably drop $300. I also notice that ANC is weirdly dependent on orientation of your head in some circumstances. I had a window seat on my previously flight where engine noise was dramatically reduced until I turned my head toward the other side of the plane and then significantly more engine noise came through.Sound: out of the box sound is very flat but using the EQ in-app made things nice. Sound quality is sooo much better than my old wired pair. Isolation from just the headphone material is pretty minimal, you can hear quite a bit of outside sound come through, especially voices whether ANC is on or off. If you like bass, these can pump a surprising amount of it, as I\'ve heard often for Sonys, but you can dial it back with the app if bass isn\'t your jam. My hearing sucks, but I haven\'t gone over 75% with these. Much louder than my previous on-ears.Phone call quality: can I make a phone call using these? Is there a microphone? I don\'t know yet but I will try it soon.Build quality: plastic all around and they don\'t feel crazy durable, but no complaints so far admittedly after only a few days. I worry most about the play/fwd/rwd button since it\'s a push/slider kind of thing, but if it keeps working then I\'m happy since the design is nice from a functionality perspective.Controls: really nice. I have a pair of JBL Bluetooth on-ear headphones, used for over a year, and I still fiddle at the gym with which button does what. After 2 days with the Sonys, I know instinctively where each control is and what it does. Granted, the Sonys have much bigger earcups so that allows more separation between buttons, more options for shape and feel, and just physically larger buttons. I would prefer USB-C for charging, but I don\'t think these will need frequent charging and I always have a micro USB on me.Battery life: halfway into my second 7 hour flight, battery still shows 100% in Bluetooth settings after one 4 hour charge from out-of-the-box. I\'m almost suspicious so time will tell. Im going to use these more with no more charging to see if charge status is accurately tracked in my phone settings. I will update once I see what\'s up.
- I bought these for $88. For that price, they\'re pretty good. Maybe a pair of sennheiser or some other brand would have been better. I don\'t know; I\'m not going to go looking for reasons to regret a purchase that I\'m largely satisfied with.Pros:Battery Life: Battery life is excellent. I didn\'t keep track of the exact number of hours I used them, but I used them most days my 3-week winter break without having to charge them until I got back to school.Sound quality: They sound different than my other headphones. Not necessarily better or worse, just different. I like themBluetooth Connectivity and Physical Buttons: Connection is stable with a really good range. I can wear them on almost the other side of my house from my phone/laptop. That said, I\'ve had a couple skips just walking down the street with my phone in my pocket. Weird, but it\'s barely noticeable. Physical buttons for play/pause/skip and volume are nice, as well as a headphone jack.My favorite part of these headphones is being able to just turn them on and start listening almost immediately. Not having to deal with wires is SO much better than I thought. (I still like to wear more comfortable headphones if I\'m gaming/sitting at a desk, but if I\'m walking to class, these are just SO convenient)Cons:Comfort: The original earpads that came with these were pretty bad. They are small and my ears touch the plastic frame inside. You don\'t notice it at first, but I could only wear the headphones for about 40mins-1hour before my ears started to hurt. That said, I have pretty large ears and a pretty large head. You may have noticed from the pictures that I put a different pair of pads on them (Audio Technica ATH-m40x). Now they are nice and comfortable. The headband can be a bit uncomfortable after ~1hour but it\'s not bad.Sort of related to Comfort: I can\'t wear these to work out because the pads get sweaty and gross.Noise Cancelling: If you\'re buying these *soley* because they\'re ANC, don\'t waste your money. The noise cancelling doesn\'t do much at all. I can only notice a difference if I turn NC off and back on again. Worst of all, if your outside and it\'s even *slightly* windy, the ANC will amplify the wind and make it roar unbearably loudly like you stuck your head out a car window. Apparently the more expensive sony headphones have Ambient Sound and Wind Noise Reduction, but these have no such feature, and I always turn ANC off. My biggest annoyance with these is that I can\'t set ANC to be off by default. No Case: I don\'t really care about this, since it fits in my backpack just fine, and I\'m not worried about it getting damaged. They seem pretty sturdy, and since they\'re not as expensive it\'s not a big deal.Overall: You should only buy these if they\'re under $100. Full stop. You should NEVER buy these at full price ($190). The higher-end sony headphones are only ~$50-60 more than these and (presumably) are better than these in every way. If you do find them on sale, maybe check out some other wireless headphones in that price range. All that said, for the $88 I paid for them, these are pretty great with the new pads. They\'re convenient, sound good, and are *reasonably* comfortable.
- I have two of these, and they are still going strong after 4 years of regular use. (That\'s 4 times as long as the WH-1000XM4 lasted me.)
