AKG K490NC High-Performance Active Noise-Cancelling Headphones
- I had a pair of Bose Quiet Comfort3 headphones for many years until my son let them fall out of his lap when he got out of the car on a long vacation drive. I used them well over 200 times, mostly for airline flights.I was going to buy another pair but decided to look into other headphones to see if anyone has come out with equally superior headphones at a more reasonable price. I haven\'t looked into upper-end NC headphones for years just because I had what I needed. I figured hey, it\'s 2013, somebody must have caught up to Bose and are selling them cheaper because they don\'t have the brand recognition or reputation. The AKG\'s caught my eye because they look sleek and they received glowing reviews, not only at Amazon but from \"independent\" reviews as well. So I pulled the trigger for $100 less, although still very expensive.I waited until I took several flights before reviewing and here are my observations. The Bose are clearly superior to the AKGs in every facet except the overall look. The noise canceling feature on the Bose eliminated every, and I mean every outside noise. The sound quality of music and movies was excellent and pure. With the AKGs, there was a constant background hum of the airplane which really interrupts the purity of whatever source you\'re listening to. It is not a bad headphone by any means, it just is not up to the standard of the Bose Quiet Comfort3. Also, the parts on the AKG are cheaper, and to pack them in their case requires you to jam the sides of the headphones against each other which will inevitably scratch them. Comfort-wise, the AKGs bothered my ears after an hour of listening. The Bose took maybe 2-1/2 hours to start feeling heavy against my ears. The padding on the AKGs is inferior to the Bose.Again, I am not slamming the AKGs. I think if I never owned the Bose I wouldn\'t notice the things I\'m noticing. These are just not in the same category as the Bose. I would rate them as good. I rate the Bose as excellent. Whether it\'s worth the additional $100 to you is the ultimate question. If I had it to do all over again, I would have bought the Bose.My son is still grounded. Darn kids!
- I have used these headphones for over a year now. They are by far the best headphones I\'ve ever owned. I\'ve compared them with the Bose QC3, QC2, QC15 and Panasonic PXC 450. Bose ones have better noise canceling but are leagues behind in terms of audio quality. The Panasonic one is pretty horrible, sounds like an HD280 with worse noise canceling than the Bose or AKG.I think what I love most is that there is no difference in sound quality between noise canceling and normal modes. Switching to noise canceling turns off the sound for a second and then the entire world quiets down while your music comes back.I\'d give it 5 stars if the quality was better and customer support was easier to find. The left cup started rattling about 8 months in and I had to get it replaced. Their website was full of dead links and their customer support number was extremely hard to find. After getting through to them though, the experience was much better. 12 months in, the right cup\'s frequency response went wonky so need to get them replaced again, but now they say the product is on back order until 3 months from now...Anyways, for anyone who needs to RMA their headphones, the number is 888-452-4254. Do not choose option 2 (service the headphone). Choose option 4, technical support, to speak to a real person and you shouldn\'t have any problems.
- I purchased these for travel on a single flight, and then wound up using them at home for the last 2 years. Excellent sound, great performance, and comfortable. Until I unfolded them one day, and the left earpiece was hanging badly. Something about the hinge mechanism causes stress to the rotational fit mechanism, and the hinge failed. It rendered the headphones unusable. I tried to repair the hinge mechanism with superglue, but the surface area on the failure point was too small to withstand any stress.
- I am an avid Spinner for over 17 yr.s 3-4 times pr week. As I have aged ( not my favorite topic ) my hearing has aged with me.I need to keep what I have left. The sound level\'s I loved before can leave me with Tinnitus at this point in my life. The music volume in a spinning class can get very loud, the AKG K490nc has totally solved my problem. I hear the music and the instructor clearly without the damage, they filter out the decibel level and frequency level that can damage yet leave whats importent to still enjoy the experience.I had heard that they were fragile which could be true if not put in a protective case when not in us.(,No case is provided a common sense misstep and certainly poor judgement on their part ).(4stars rather then 5) they need to have a quick wipe down when finished use. They have held a charge for more then 8 hr\'s are smaller then most other headsets which seem to cost more and they are light. I am never aware that I have the on.
- Pros: sound quality, good noise cancelling (about 80-90% reduction of ambient noise), looks nice, battery duration is goodCons: made of plastic (mine broke after 8 months with little use (about 2 times/week)), needs to charge with a different cable, cable plug could be smaller (if you\'re using in a smartphone in your pocket, it\'s hard to bend the leg up as climbing stairs without forcing the plug)I\'d give 4 stars if it wasn\'t for the cheap plastic that broke so easily (I usually am a very careful person with my stuff)
- This is the second pair of Noise-Cancelling headphones that I\'ve owned. The first was Plane quiet. The main problem with the AKG headphones is that they were not very effective. I said were because then they broke 3 months after I bought them. There\'s a small piece of plastic that connects the ear phone to the head band that snapped. On the plus side, they folded up nicely into a flat case. I liked that they could recharge with USB.I would NOT recommend buying these.
