Audio Technica ATH-ANC9 Active Noise Canceling Headphones (Japan Import)
- UPDATE May-2014____Comfort: I wore these on a flight from US to Singapre (~24 hours). After about 4-5 hours, you can feel the pressure on your ears and start to get a bit of discomfort. At that point, I would have to take a break for 30 minutes or so, and then I could go another 2-3 hours before the pressure started building again. I will say, it\'s pretty wild to hear how loud the airplane actually is when you take the headphones off. These do an excellent job in noise cancelling. My wife has the Sony ANC MDR-10 ($199 version). They are a lot more comfortable than the Audio Technica\'s in my opinion. I prefer the sound quality and Noise Cancellation of the Audio Technica\'s though. For flights under 5 hours, I would go with the Audio Technica\'s hands down. For longer flights (8-12 hours), I tend to opt for my wife\'s Sony\'s unless she\'s travelling with me.Battery Life: The battery life for my AT\'s seems to last in the 22-24 hour range. Whereas the Sony\'s tend to last more in the 20 hour range.Odd Sounds: I\'ve read a review somewhere that when they rest one of the ear cups against something, they hear a strange pulsing. I have NOT experienced this at all with my pair. I\'ve placed them against the seat and against the wall of the airplane and have received no strange noises. For mine, I do notice when I turn my head 90 degrees (one ear in direction of nose, one in direction of tail), I will get an odd whisping noise. I\'m not sure why this would occur, perhaps it\'s the sound engine trying to adjust for the direction of new sounds? It\'s not really an issue because I only turn my head like that when I\'m stretching my neck or something.Adapters: The adapters work well. When I was on an A380, the dual adapter had a strange humming noise when the noise cancellation was turned on. If I turned the ANC off, the humming went away (the passive NC was still pretty good). It may have been a problem with the socket in the particular seat I was in, or it may have been an issue across the A380. The return flight was a 777 and the dual adapter worked perfectly with no issues on the ANC.____I purchased these primarily for noise cancelling, but wanted something with clean styling, good sound, comfortable, reliable, and price-appropriate. I was set on ordering the Beats (styling), but decided against after reading numerous reviews. I\'ve tried the Beats on in the store and didn\'t have any complaints, but for the Price, figured I would purchase a price-appropriate product.Import? So the biggest concern I had on the Japan Import versions was...are they legit? They seem like it. The box says designed in Japan, manufactured in China. Once received, the shrink-wrap was a little suspect. High-quality, but not really shrink wrap. More like clear wrapping paper taped around the box. With that said, the box was legit (not some plain white box). It is professionally printed with the promo on it and the technical information on the back is written in Japanese, which validates the Japanese Import.Headphone ConstructionReally Good. The headphones are very light-weight, but they are sturdy. They don\'t feel cheap at all. It\'s the perfect balance between light-weight and sturdy materials of construction that signal quality workmanship. They come with a really nice case. It is a dense foam case, so not too bulky but provides enough protection if you drop it. It also comes with a nice carabiner (sp?) clip that has a threaded union to lock the clip if you want. This provides a great ability to clip the headphones to an outside backpack without having to worry about theft, and it frees up space in the back-pack.StylingI\'m pleased with the styling. I think the Beats offer a cleaner look, but I knew I wouldn\'t be as please with the styling of the AudioTechnica\'s. My biggest complaint is that the headband sticks out rather far outside of my head when wearing them. But the clean, flat-black looks helps to minimize the protruding appearance of headphones. The ear cups are not too bulky or obnoxious. Basically exactly what I expected.ComfortSo far so good. I\'ve worn them for an hour and didn\'t really realize they were on. I\'ve read some reviews that complain about the headphones being too tight or the ear-cups being too small. I\'ve always considered myself to have a larger head and don\'t find these discomforting at all. For hats, I wear a 7-3/8\" cap to give you an estimate of my headsize. But given the amount of protrusion on the headband, I don\'t see any size head being a problem.Functionality - SoundI suppose this is the most important part. I\'m no audiophile so don\'t look for this review to go into treble, mid-tones, etc. You\'ll have to look at additional reviews for that one. But the sound is good in my opinion. I can\'t tell the difference really between my skull-candy ear buds and these when listening to music on the iPad...but I primarily listen to Hip-Hop anyways, which I feel many would argue is terrible for hearing good sound in music. I am happy with the Bass. I don\'t feel like my brain is going to explode but it is pretty good overall. Not thumping like beats, but adds the right amount of effect for good movie watching!Functionality - Noise CancellingGreat! They arrived a day later than I had hoped so I didn\'t get to use them on my round-trip flight from MSP to TPA. But I have been wearing them around the apartment. They successfully blocked out the refrigerator, furnace, and jack-hammer across the street. I even missed a bunch of texts from my wife and the phone was sitting right next to me. I\'ve got a 24HR flight to Singapore next month, so I\'ll update this review to 5 stars if they block out all the ruckus. As far as hearing the noise cancellation wave, you can hear it if you try and listen for it. But it sounds like a gentle air is coming through a floor register or something. It\'s kind of refreshing, not annoying. And it\'s not really noticeable unless you actively try and pick it out over the music. The other reason I really like these headphones is that they work if the batteries are dead. A lot of the noise cancelling headphones won\'t operate at all if the batteries are dead. These will!
- Man, these are great. I\'ve had them for a year or so.The Noise canceling works pretty good. Still haven\'t really worked out the major differences between the three noise canceling settings. I like blue, airplane mode. You may need to buy a headphone extender if you want to use these with a TV, or want to go further than 4feet. Excellent quality though. The lambskin on your ears and the foam in the earpiece is beautiful. You can wear these for quite a while. I have a pretty big head, and they fit well. I have to extend out the knotches a few click, but that\'s easily managed. I haven\'t owned many headphone like this, so there\'s no comparisons here, but I can say that they do a great job.UPDATED: Just the other day, I noticed that the lamb skin seal started to separate--exposing the white foam insides. I wished that the craftmaship would have lasted longer than a year or two, but it is what it is. Maybe it was how I handled them, but I returned them to the case after using them, so I\'m not sure what more I could have done.
- I ordered these when my office redesigned a high-wall cubicle workspace into a trendy open office floor plan that greatly increased distraction levels when performing work that requires concentration. A coworker spoke well of this pair and has had them for a couple of years -- they spoke well of the product\'s general durability and the manufacturer\'s customer service. I\'m not an audio expert, so this isn\'t a review for someone who is looking for very specific sound quality. Other reviewers have covered that.Pros include the noise cancelling feature -- with settings for different environments -- and comfort. I don\'t generally wear them for more than a couple of hours at one sitting, but could easily wear them all day if I didn\'t have to take them off and go to a meeting that day. The cord is removable, so I don\'t have to manage it if I\'m just wearing the headphones to block out distractions and don\'t have music playing. The cons for this product are minor considering my expectations. They sound good if, like me, you are switching from a pair of earbuds and are trying to muffle some surrounding conversations. If you\'re an audio snob, though, you\'re likely better off investing in something more expensive -- you get what you pay for, after all. Keep in mind that they are not wireless. You can remove the cord if you just want the noise-cancelling feature; you need to plug them in if you want to play music. Also, as a minor annoyance, the storage case is by necessity bulky and takes up space in my bag, but I wouldn\'t recommend transporting them without it.
