- Great bass!!!
- I\'ve been researching high-end headphones with my son. After much online research and discussion we spent a few hours a local headphone specialist. We tested the usual suspects: Audeze, HifiMan, Oppo, Sennheiser, Beyerdynamic... They all sounded good, but none just right. Still, they renewed my interest in listening to music at home for pleasure rather than just listening on public transport and at the office.A few days later I found a pair of ATH-WS550iS at a local shop for an embarrassingly-low price. Wow. In my opinion they are at least as much fun as the Audeze LC2 Classic. The bass is present, strong and deeply satisfying but not boomy nor cluttering, the midrange (especially high-energy guitars) is like a drug and the highs are clearer, to me anyway, than the Audezes and without any harshness. Vocals as expected. Drums a delight. The soundstage seems good enough to be fun, though I\'m no soundstage aficionado. I\'m experimenting with increasingly complex, demanding music wondering how such inexpensive headphones can provide such pleasure and wondering when I will hit the wall of their capability. So far, only increasing, confounding delight. The highs are clear but never fatiguing or annoying. No honk, no 5k ring... at all. I think the popular phrase is \"buttery smooth\". Even so, the highs are not \"recessed\", to my ears. Having played the drums I\'m aware of the wonderful sound of cymbals and hats. The Audeze\'s cymbal reproduction did not satisfy me: too recessed and seeming to have a blanket thrown over them. The ATH-WS550iS cymbal reproduction seems in perfect balance, clear and without unwanted sharpness nor artificiality. As far as sound pressure, they are efficient. For example, I drive them strongly with just half volume on my iPhone. No need for an amp. I\'ve driven them harder briefly. They achieved jaw-and-neck-vibrating levels, with no sign of distortion. The ATH-WS550iS are comfortable, having just the right cushion size and clamping - even for someone as fussy as me. One little quirk I have is I don\'t like to touch plastic. So, I cut off the tops of some nice black socks and rigged up covers for the pads. Now they are absurdly comfortable. No stickiness ever. I could literally sleep in them. One thing worth mentioning. Before settling on the socks solution, I tried sticking on various felts and cloths with double sided tape etc. When each experiment failed I brutally ripped it off of the seemingly-fragile pads. No damage at all. I was pleasantly surprised. Whatever material Audio Technical has used for the pads, it\'s thin, soft and pliable but tough as skin.I did a quick audio-recording test with the mic. It\'s pleasantly clear and audible even when just hanging down but does benefit somewhat by moving it closer to the mouth. No complaints about the flat cable. And the length seems just right.Sure, I\'d like to spend a few weeks with a pair of Meze Empyreans, but the ATH-WS550iS are a spectacular offering from Audio Technica. Bravo. So much musical pleasure.
